The Bryan Milham Demonstration at the Kennet and Avon Woodturners

Thursday 10th August 2023

Kennet & Avon Woodturners invited Bryan Milham to demonstrate at the club meeting on Thursday 10 August. Bryan’s brief for the evening was to demonstrate turning different types of candle stick holders to stimulate and provide inspiration to our members in preparation for our forthcoming annual competition in December. Bryan began by explaining that there are legal requirements to making and selling candle-holders, He provided handouts and also the same document which can be downloaded from HERE Bryan started by turning a Tee-Light Holder, having ebonised it he added Jo Sonja Iridescent colours by using the centrifugal forces of the piece, a very effective and pleasing finish was achieved in very quick time. He then turned a free-form candle stick making it in two pieces, the spindle, and a base. To demonstrate the sort of misshape you might get, if you turn without an overall design in your mind. Bryan then moved on to turn a classic shaped candle stick, using what he called the Dot to Dot method, using a storyboard, Plans are HERE, to mark the transition points, cutting to depth, then connecting two depth cuts with the correct shaped curve. This method he explained is how to ‘Copy Turn’ multiple items, like staircase blusters. He demonstrating the intricate spindle work using for most part a Skew Chisel. Bryan ended an excellent evening by describing in some detail the type of finishes that can be used to pleasing effect. Returning to the Free-Form candlestick, he admitted that it was not quite a full free-form, but with the addition of a painted finish could become a Christmas Snowman candlestick. Our thanks goes to Bryan for providing an excellent and interesting evening with great humour.
